History Tuesday: Sputnik 1

Russian satellite that was the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. It was launched on October 4th, 1957. This event started the “space race” between the US and the Soviet Union. Here, it was referred to as the “sputnik crisis.” It spent 3 months in orbit, traveled 37 million miles, and took data on the composition of the upper atmosphere. It took about 96 minutes to complete one orbit. The project planning began in May of 1954.
